Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 title.
Motsepe stated that the decision by CAF’s independent Appeal Board to strip Senegal of the title and award it to Morocco must be respected by all parties involved.
Commitment to Integrity
The CAF President praised both the organization and the independent Appeal Board for handling the case with professionalism and fairness, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high standards in football governance.
“The decision must be respected, as it reflects CAF’s commitment to integrity, discipline, and fairness in African football.”
He added that protecting the credibility of competitions like AFCON is essential for the growth and reputation of football across the continent.
Senegal’s Right to Appeal
At the same time, Motsepe acknowledged Senegal’s decision to challenge the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
He welcomed the move, stating that CAF respects the legal rights of all member associations to seek further review through independent judicial bodies.
“We fully respect Senegal’s right to appeal, and we trust that the process at CAS will be conducted fairly and transparently.”
Ongoing Uncertainty
While Morocco has already been declared the official winner of AFCON 2025, the final outcome of the dispute may depend on the ruling by CAS, which is expected to provide a definitive decision on the matter.
The case continues to attract attention across Africa and globally, with football fans closely following developments in what has become one of the most high-profile disputes in recent AFCON history.
